A nicely preserved memory of the earthquake that shook the port of Kobe. Small area but it deserves a visit while in Japan. Easily connected by the rail network from Osaka or you can use the JR pass conveniently. Less crowded and lively by seaside.

What I am truly amazed about Kobe is the way the government preserve this historical spot. There is a museum behind it and it totally blows my mind. The government really take care of the area. It's good. It's part of history. I love this place like a lot.

This is a memorial park for the Great Hanshin earthquake of 1995. There is a video presentation in both English and Japanese. Part of the ruins of the original walkway have remained in remembrance of the event.

Impressive view to a tragic history. Similar to Hiroshima, this is another place to feel how close tragedy and modern, bustling, happy life is in Japan.

The Kobe Port Earthquake Memorial Park is a part of the Meriken Pier whose 60-meter breakwater has been damaged in the Great Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake. It has been preserved in this state and is currently maintained for visitors to be able to view it safely. There is also an exhibit of films and images showing the state of the earthquake victims at the time, the restoration process, and more. Experience the terror brought on by the earthquake firsthand here at the Kobe Port Earthquake Memorial Park.
