ASJ was founded in 1872 to "promote and publish discoveries on subjects relating to Japan and other Asiatic Countries."​ There is no limit to the range of ASJ's interests. Its only requirement of speakers and authors is that each is expected to tell something in his or her field that has not been previously published. ASJ asks for something new.
