I would have liked to do a guided tour, but they were booked out quite far in advance, so I'd highly recommend locking in a date as early as possible. You can still reserve a place to do a short, self-guided tour and then move through to the tasting room. This was plenty of fun in itself reading about the history of Yamazaki and Suntory along the way. The tasting room is amazing, with an excellent selection of spirits (a number of which are only aged in alternative barrels in-house, and so are exclusive to the distillery tasting room only!). The prices for tasting are more than reasonable, and it's a casual environment where you can speak with others doing their own tastings. The only let down at the distillery is the product range that you can buy from the store/gift shop. Because Yamazaki is so popular, there is hardly any available, and only a very small selection of Japanese spirits. There are almost more American Whiskies from the Suntory range than there are Japanese for sale. However there's some great branded glassware and other accessories, so you just have to keep an eye out for the whiskies you want elsewhere. Still a great couple of hours, and would definitely look to do this again if I have the chance to return to Japan. It should be on any whisky drinkers list of 'things to do'.

This place was phenomenal! Best whisky in the world. Their tour was very informative and the tasting part was delightful!! I had the pleasure of tasting some of the best whiskies in the world at the bar downstairs at a very affordable price! I cannot wait to go back.

The tour of the distillery was great, they can provide you with an audio tour in English and you get a good understanding of the history and process and some tasting at the end. What I didn’t like or understand is WHY you cannot buy any bottles of Whisky there?! You can buy a drink of whiskey but not a bottle. Japanese logic.

Honestly, this is a very very cool distillery to check out and it has plenty of history behind it. The only one thing that kind of sucked for us was that due to maintenance, the distillery tour was closed to us even though we had called in advance and were told we could come for the tour by just walking in without a reservation(yeah that kind of sucked). On a brighter note, at the very least, we had the chance to go and check out their museum and whiskey tasting. You do have to pay for the tastings of whiskey but after having tried three of the more popular whiskeys, I walked out only having spent 1400 yen(so not too bad). Hopefully the next time we come back we really hope we’ll get the chance to do the tour. I would still recommend this place though, even if just for the museum.

Had an amazing time. Booked the museum as the tour was sold out. When I got there, I asked the lady to let me know if there were any cancellations as I was very keen on the tour. She came find me and I was able to join the tour. So lucky! Great tasting! Would wholeheartedly recommend! The only down is that they are sold out of their own whisky so I wasn’t able to buy any. That’s a shame!

NOTE: TOUR IS ONLY IN JAPANESE. Book in advance(months).... like way In advance if you want to do the factory tour. Even the museum should be booked at least 2 weeks in advanced. When I went they were over sold on there Staples so they were only selling small batch bottles limited to 1 per person. The tasting is cheap and good.

This is 30 mins drive from downtown Kyoto. If you drive there, note that there is no parking at the premises, you have to leave your car and walk ten minutes from the parking lot near the train station. Museum tour is free, and informative display of the history and heritage of the Yamazaki Distillery. You can pay for the tasting and the gift shop upstairs has limited whiskey for sale.

If you love japanese whiskeys you must come to the Yamazaki Distillery. There are 2 parts to this visit. If you wish to see the distillery process you need to pre-book and arrive on time, there is a small fee to pay as well. Otherwise you are free to enjoy the free museum and displays and also purchase tasting portions at the bar. It is such a wonderful experience here and I strongly recommend a visit.
