Ikaho is awesome. Hot springs, funky shops and a whole bunch of stairs leading up to a cool old shrine. Busy place any day of the week. Go early.

Ikaho onsen is not as famous as some of the other onsen within a few hours drive of Tokyo but it's worth a visit. One of Japan's oldest onsen. The rusty brown waters which run through the town and many of the hotels are the town's standout feature. The steps running through the center of the town lead to the hot spring source. There is a place to drink from the hot spring at the top, but just drink a little as it's very strong. The town feels a little dated and some of the hotels are closed down, but this also gives it a little bit of a nostalgic feel.

渋川駅や関越道の渋川伊香保ICの方面から来る道と、高崎の方向・水沢うどんの集落方面から来る道の、伊香保温泉の直前でちょうどぶつかるY字路にあります。 立地上その交差点は観光シーズンの土日は基本渋滞しているので、狭い駐車場からの出入りは、水沢方面は簡単ですが、伊香保温泉方面は信号待ちの間にうまく前に入れさせて貰ってください。 行政の外郭団体なのでしょうか、天下りの匂いがしなくもないですが、建物の入口から入ると受付はあるものの誰もいませんでした。 狭い建物内をうろちょろしつつ埒が明かないので、受付の奥にある事務所的なところに声掛けすると人が出てきてくれました（この辺が行政っぽい）。お土産が買える場所を聞くと親切に教えてくれました。

想像していたより、すごく良いところでした。雨の中でしたが、それがむしろ雰囲気がよかったです。朝の9時半過ぎには、少しづつお店が開き始め、10時にはそこそこ人が動き初め、良い感じです。石段の途中にある岸権旅館の入口付近に足湯があり、ちょっと脇道に入ると金太夫さんの足湯もありました。坂の途中にあるお土産屋も、しつこく声掛けなどもせず、ブラっと気になったお店を覗いて見るのもいいです。看板と思わしき可愛い猫ちゃんも景色と相まって、ほっこりしています。

誰も相手をしてくれなくて、こんなものかという感じですね。 温泉むすめをアピールしたい割には、何も無かったです。 キャラデザやって、キャラの作り込みも無く、関連した温泉もなくて、だから何っていう感じ。 伊香保温泉を盛り上げたいなら、まずすることは、無料駐車場の整備でしょうね。下の方に土地が余っていましたからね。 バスも高崎駅からは、1時間に1回で、居場所も無くて、15時が最終。水沢観音との相乗効果もなく、ゆっくりとおなくなりになる場所でした。 水沢観音は、凄く良かったです！
