This outdoor public onsen is wonderful in winter. We were lucky enough to have visited while light snow was falling. The water was quite hot, but still bearable in intervals. The bath is very large, but the entrance to the bath is at one end, so you must wade through the hot water to get to the other end. There are no bathing facilities, and no rental towels. You can purchase a souvenir towel, but it was a bit expensive during our visit. It is best to bring your own towel. Make sure to rinse your body in the designated area before entering the bath.

It was an amazing experience, a privilege to experience bathing in the Sai-no-Kawara hot spring. It’s large and surrounded by the sounds of the river. I was lucky to enjoy this huge hot spring by myself for 15mn as it was a very cold and snowy day in a low tourism season. It’s large enough than 20-30 people can bathe at the same time and you still have enough space! The area around the hot spring is amazing too, especially in the snow season!

Huge outdoor onsen surrounded by a lush forest. Be aware that there is no shower to wash off before getting in the pool. Valuables locker are outside the entrance. But larger lockers are available in the changing rooms. Recccomend going on Mon - Thur to avoid crowds. If you're lucky you might get the huge bath to yourself!! Apparently mixed gender bathing is allowed on Friday. Although not sure how it works as we went on a Monday.

Large out door hot water pool is amazing. Very cheap price. No shower available though. Sainokawara park is also very beautiful. Around 10 mins from Kusatsu onsen town.

Lovely outdoor onsen. 600 yen to get in, but bring your own towel, as large towels are 1300 also the men's side is pretty open to passersby seeing you from the path, so if you're a shy man, it's probably not for you. For those who can get past that, this is a really unique experience in a large, hot pool, definitely worth a visit.
