The Mt. Hakodate Ropeway is the name of an aerial lift, as well as its operator. The line climbs Mount Hakodate in Hakodate, Japan. As of 2004, this is the most heavily used aerial lift line in Japan, transporting 1,559,000 riders yearly. The aerial tramway was prominently featured in Noein, a 2005 anime. Cabins operate once every 10 minutes. The whole ride takes 3 minutes. The adult fare costs 1,000 for one-way, or 1,500 for a round-trip.

It actually lived up to it's reputation. Took the cable car up about 7:45, but ended up staying until almost 9, in part for the amazing view, in part to wait for the crowds to clear. I would recommend you go a bit later to miss the tour groups. Great place for a romantic evening. If you are fighting for viewing space, consider checking out the view of the bay while you wait. The boats at anchor are a nice sight and there is really no one trying to get a good space to take a picture.

Aboit 1200 yen round trip for the rope way. Suggest getting there early to avoid crowds for sunset and securing a good pic spot. Go into the restaurant for the view but skip the over priced menu items... beer included. My wife and i found this out when we got totally ignored by staff chose to leave, happier to save the 5000 yen we would gave spent.

Truly a must see place in Hakodate! Was easy to get here. I took a bus from Hakodate Station and took a tram on the way back from down the hill. The view is spectacular. I came before sunset as did many others but it was worth the wait and the crowds. This place was very popular with locals just as much as tourists.

Was not able to ride the ropeway itself because of the weather when we were there. There was a strong wind advisory which cause them to close the facility early. It’s near a park with lots of cherry blossoms so it’s not a bummer. ️

Great observation point for entire city of Hakodate. There is a nice gift shop, restaurants, multiple viewpoints including around the back looking out at ships in the sea. Winter months means a earlier close time, I missed the last night time tram going up which leaves at 850pm and so I came back the next morning. It was pretty chilly, so bundle up!

The view at the top was great. We visited around sunset time. The ropeway costs 1260 Yen round trip, but if you’re adventurous and want to walk up the mountain there is no entrance fee to the observatory.

The Ropeway services are not cheap relative to the amount of time you will actually be in the cable car. However, it is an extremely convenient way to visit the Mt Hakodate Observation Deck, and experiencing the elevation change in such a unique way is an awesome experience. Mt Hakodate was shrouded in fog when I went. It was like entering a cloud--but there were very few angles from which to view the city. The car leaves every 10 minutes and costs around 1200.
