Toll gate entrance to the famous Hakone Turnpike, this is where you can enjoy this wonderful scenic route climbing uphill. Toll is charged in cash and per direction, meaning if you want to come back down the same way, you need to pay again to \exit\. This is mostly a one-lane road with traffic flowing both ways, uphill drive has certain short sections opened up for overtaking uphill. No overtaking sections downhill. Road gets busy during the daytime especially when the weather is fine with obnoxious oblivious Japanese drivers mostly powering their family MPVs or low powered vehicles refusing to give way even when the road opens up. If you need to overtake, doing so will mostly be illegal at your own judgment and risk. If you are looking to avoid traffic, the best time to arrive is early in the morning and definitely before 0900.
Mazda Turnpike! Amazing driving road. This is where the legendary Motorhead video was shot. Extremely well-maintained road, excellent views and friendly staff. If you're lucky (few clouds), you can stop off at various observation points and soak in the views. No speed cameras and low traffic. Pass points available (lanes widen) if you get stuck behind slow cars so just wait it out. Watch out for corners that show up right after the crests. Reviewer below mentioned that he/she was chased by law enforcement but I haven't seen them here yet. Mazda Turnpike Lounge is located near the end of the road. If you're lucky, you can see some awesome machines and enjoy the view of Hakone. It's never busy so it's definitely worth taking this road when encountering traffic jams leaving the Hakone area.
Largely regarded as the birthplace of drifting in Japan. For about 700 yen you can drive the road all day. There is a cafe at the top with brochures for a company called fun 2 drive that let's you rent iconic Japanese sports car to drive on Mazda turnpike and izu skyline.
