I spent 2 weeks of my vacation last year here and had a fantastic time. I took 2 classes each day and spent the evenings exploring the island. Sensei Kevin (the english speaking teacher) has a very educational way of teaching and the place where the dojo is (Murasaki Mura) is like taken from a fairy tale. Well worth it and I will be back here in a few years!

Excellent introduction to Okinawan Karate by Kevin Chaplin at the IKSC in Yomitan. I brought two friends visiting from the United States with minimal martial arts background that wanted to understand and experience karate in Okinawa for the first time. We called on short notice and scheduled a block and it exceeded all expectations. Kevin greeted us and provided a great summary of the history and origins of karate in Okinawa, his own personal story of how he ended up here from England and then enthusiastically guided us through a 1 hour training session of the basics. He was engaging, passionate and patient with us beginners despite his obvious experience and skill level. Additionally, the setting in recreated Okinawan village made the day all the more fun. I highly recommend Kevin Chaplin and the IKSC to anyone with even a little interest in learning about Okinawan Karate.

This location truly captures the spirit of Okinawan Karate. After viewing “Tee-The True Spirit of Okinawan Karate” on Youtube, which features training at this local, I contacted Kevin Chaplin and set up training at the International Karate Study Centre. The atmosphere within the old Okinawa Village setting was perfect after quite a long-time break from training. It felt like home, really old school. Kevin’s inspirational story of how he came to Okinawa to study the way of Karate coupled with both his humble British hospitality and his exceptional Karate skill made for an unforgettable experience. The high-level technical Karate instruction in such an old world setting exceeded my expectations. Whether you’ve never trained in Karate or you’ve been following the path for a lifetime, if you want to train in the birthplace of Karate at a location that both looks and feels like you would have expected in days gone by, this is the place.
