Beautiful! I have been passing this monastery for quite a while on my extended commute. Since I am writing a English conversation textbook (or materials) introducing places of interest in Yamaguchi, I decided to visit one morning in June (the 24th) which happened to be the birthday of the 92 year old Spanish priest who, living in Japan for 67 years of his life, spoke to me in perfect Japanese and near perfect English. He lives an works in the Xavier Church in Yamaguchi but comes to hold mass here, every morning I presume. She shook my hand warmly (at about 8 am) and then left to go back to the City. One of the nuns, if that is what they are called, then took me to a side room of the chapel where the nuns were singing the praises of Jesus in harmonious a capella. The brochure of the monastery claims this \house\ be the closest heaven on earth. The chapel was beautiful. The voices of the nuns even more so. The dedication of the nuns, who appear to be over 60 (to say the least) and their prayers, created a very beautiful other-worldly atmosphere at least. The nun who had invited me in then told me that everyone was welcome (to do presumably as I had done and listen to their prayers) since God is always the same God, our father she suggested with an expansive gesture. I also found out that the Sisters sell slippers and Christmas cards depicting the Virgin Mary. They also make confectionery, and the Priest was given some sort of birthday cake, but I am not sure if or where the confectionery is sold. There is also stained glass and several statues of Mary at least one of which depicts her as a giant holding the crucified Jesus in miniature to her bosom, as if he were still of the age, and size, to be in swaddling clothes.
