Tucked away on the NW coast of Japan facing the Sea of Japan, this community retains its small village feeling but surrounded by many historic trails and footpaths. Well worth a visit of several days!

The great feeling I know from other towns from Edo period doesn't exist here. This is a simple provincial town that can be found everywhere in Japan. Nothing remembers of the old times, no memorials, no museum, no boat that was used at the time silver was transported from here. Don't see how this can be a world heritage site. When I checked prices for Ryokan (traditional hotels) on international and Japanese sites, they asked for over 400 a night. Definitely not worth it. The town is old in a negative sense, not taken care of at all. Very clearly a no go suggestion from me. The Japanese reviews talk about the great onsen experience. There is an Onsen in Sanbesan area that I recommend. It is only 500 to use
温泉津温泉は1300年前の開湯以来湯治場として栄え、石見銀山からの銀山街道沿いに温泉宿が建ち並びました。当時の面影を残す温泉街は国の重要伝統的建造物群保存地区に選定されていて、2007年7月に「石見銀山遺跡とその文化的景観」の一部として世界文化遺産に登録されました。温泉街には共同浴場が2ヶ所あり、「薬師湯」は日本温泉協会の天然温泉の審査で最高評価の「オール5」を獲得しています。泉質はナトリウム・カルシウム一塩化物温泉。薬師湯の大正ロマン風の雰囲気漂う木造建築の旧館は、温泉津に現存する温泉施設として最古の建物で、建築学的にも貴重なものだそうです。現在はカフェに改装され営業。もう1ヶ所の「元湯 泉薬湯」は高温の湯が特徴。どちらも源泉が浴槽のすぐ傍なので温泉が新鮮で、浴槽に源泉の含有物が長年かけてこびりついた様は温泉通には垂涎です。
