Awesome view, it is very impressive to see it first hand. If you are in the prefecture it is worth making the trip there. If you hace time and the weather allows it there is quite a bit of hiking to be done. I would recommended going in the cooler months either before or after summer. Also the trip up there in autumn with the leaves changing colour is very beautiful. Would highly recommend it.

One of the most beautiful crater in japan ... I went there on my birthday. Although the weather was cloudy, and it was my wish to see the crater even if it’s for a moment. And behold! My wish was granted ... I feel so lucky that sun shone so bright for a moment and I could get the glimpse of this beautiful crater and clicked several pics ... later, it rained heavily there though. But it proved to be such a beautiful day. I will go again and again.

Okama Crater (御釜), resembling a traditional cooking pot, is situated on Zao (蔵王) mountain (1841 m) between Yamagata and Miyagi Prefectures. The crater's diameter is 325 m with depth of 28 m. Magnificent place, few km long hiking trail, view is amazing, bring a jacket because it is windy up there, there is huge parking so no worries, can be traffic jam because of narrow parking entrance. There is a building with a restaurant and souvenir store. No worries for clouds, the view is amazing even on a cloudy day

Before going up to the mountain, it is suggested that you check the live camera of Okama in advance. Sometimes it gets foggy in the mountains and you wouldn’t be able to see the lake. This is what you can expect on a clear and sunny day. The view is unbelievably breathtaking and calm. Walk along the rocky paths, and you’ll find the surrounding scenery fulfilling enough. I went in the middle of May and it was still quite windy and chilly. Be sure to keep warm!
