The experience exceeded my expectations. The Japanese culture is difficult to access at a deeper level when you are not a native speaker so having the experience narrated by multi-lingual speakers also fluent in Japanese language, culture and history was priceless. I am a designer and teach architecture and furniture design and the knowledge and perspective that was imparted was inspiring. From the history and provenance of the objects used in the ceremony to the design of the space itself, the tea ceremony managed to put my entire trip into focus and made the rest of my time in Japan much richer. Plus the tea was amazing…

We had a surprisingly good time with Tyas and Stephen! Thank you so much for te experience! It is not a common Japanese Tea Ceremony but rather a social gathering with green tea. What was really interesting, was the introduction to the ‘ceremony’ where we got a little history lesson. The 2 men know what they are doin and what they are talking about. It is nice to be able to have tea with Japanese people, without the trouble of the language (explanations are in English). Even for Dutch people from Belgium or the Nederland: Tyas speaks Dutch . Even though it was sometimes embarrassing to say or do something wrong, I never felt uncomfortable! Great experience, a must when you visit Kyoto!

I spent 3 hours that felt like 3 minutes with Tyas for the tea ceremony. It was one of my TOP 3 experience in Japan. We were a group of 11. Enjoyed a thick matcha in a centuries old bowl.
