A small shrine but quiet and peaceful in the midst of busy Ueno.
I love the architecture of the temple, although it is incredibly small. I went to get a goshuin and they had two kinds. I got both but am highly disappointed by the quality, both are just messy- I have the feeling she didn't give a damn how it looks because I'm foreigner so it doesn't actually matter.
It's a bit hard to find as it is on a tiny hill, and no eye catching signs leading to it. You will see a remain (face) of the original buddha which fell during the Tokyo earthquake in 1923, and whose body was dismantled for its metal during the WW2. I thought the display was a bit too plain and humble for what it is, and wish it had a greater presentation of the buddha and its history to honor what it once was.
You can find a big Buddha mask here - it is the remnants of a four hundred year old Buddha statue which was destroyed in an earthquake.
