Look. If you get in before 8:30, it’ll be a short visit. But it’s in Tachikawa and takes a long time to reach from Tokyo, so you and everyone else are going to have to wait. I’ve been coming for 7 years to renew my visa and although the service has always been fine and helpful, the fact that it’s chronically understaffed makes the visit infuriating. As other people have said, if they could just open the other windows to have people (who at least speak English) available specifically to answer all of the questions the wait times would be halved. I’ve never seen more than three people at the desk. The other windows have always been closed. And a quick peek behind the curtain when you’re up at the desk shows there’s nothing else going on in that space. After the initial visit to drop off your application, the return trip to pick up is smooth. It’s just the first visit that’s soul-crushing. If we didn’t have to be here every year, we wouldn’t choose to come. The experience is prohibitive and I often wonder if that’s the point.

As per my experience, I have always found this place very nice and working staffs are very well mannered.

Multiple entry: I’m writing a review because reading the other’s ones helped me. I arrive at 8.30 just before the opening of the door and I go the number 9. The desk office open at 9.00. During my waiting time I completed a form which was at my disposal and at 9.15 it was my turn ( 4 desks opened) At this time they was 35 people waiting. The officer ask me to go to the post office (5min walk) to pay my taxes for multiple entry. (6000). I came back and he attended me immediately. Gave me my passeport and resident card back with the sticker for multiples entry. I left the immigration office at 9.45. I hope this review help you to plan your visit here.

Efficiently run, yet very busy, understaffed, take your pick from numerous other posts; ironically it takes about 4 minutes to process “one number” if you do the math; still, the wait is long. On the positive, plenty of space on a dirt side street to park a car on top of the 10 or so parking spaces inside the complex. If you forget or need to retake a picture there is a photo booth right on the corner of the “shaken center” across the street (see picture). Clean toilets, vending machine, well air conditioned, a crib inside the waiting room (not sure if there is a changing table elsewhere?).

It looks comfortable for long time waiting. Stuff friendly and professional.
