We’re making a personal off-grid water system that turns into water supply and wastewater infrastructure. It purifies wastewater to clean water on the spot. It’s similar to a solar power system. Our focus is on the problem of water shortage that is progressing on a global scale. Originally, I was a researcher in water supply and wastewater. Right now, water is circulated in a very large system. Through my research, however, I developed doubts about the current system with regards to the cost and construction period. When I experienced water outage after an earthquake, I became keenly aware of the limits of the current system. This is when I realized that if we had a personal off-grid water system, we can efficiently utilize water resources in any place. I also believe that it will give us more freedom. For example, we’ll be able to live on the mountain, sea, desert, even Mars without worry about water. Now we’re in the prototyping stage. We developed a compact water circulation system for showers. We took a shower prototype and participated in SXSW, Burning Man and Japan earthquake disaster support. The next step is improving the prototype and user testing.
