仲哀天皇の御代の神功皇后にまつわる伝説がある史跡で、皇后が朝鮮半島へ三韓征伐に赴く際に船を泊めたという伝説があります。（この地域には神功皇后の伝承はたくさんあります。）伝説の真偽はともかく、この石の周辺からは弥生時代の土器が発見されていて、古くから海の神を祀る祭祀跡だったとのことです。すぐ近くには八幡古表神社というこれまた神功皇后に縁のある神社があるので、このあたりは縄文弥生時代から信仰の土地だったのでしょう。
